Storing sneakers through a Pakistani summer

Heat yellows rubber and humidity grows mould, and a Pakistani summer supplies both at once. Storing a pair properly here is mostly about where you put the box, not what you spend.

The three things that damage stored sneakers

  • Heat accelerates the oxidation that turns midsoles cream — see why sneaker soles turn yellow. Lofts, cupboards on an outside wall and anywhere that catches afternoon sun are the worst places in a house.
  • Humidity feeds mould on leather and suede, and monsoon months are when we see it. It shows up as fine grey-green spots, usually inside first.
  • Damp trapped in the shoe is worse than damp in the air. A pair put away slightly wet will develop mould in a sealed box within weeks.

What to actually do

  1. Fully dry before storing. Two days in shade with paper inside, not one. Paper draws moisture out of the lining where you cannot feel it.
  2. Store in the coolest interior spot you have. An inside wall, low down, away from windows. Floor level in a bedroom cupboard beats a shelf near the ceiling.
  3. Let air move. A sealed plastic box in humid weather is a terrarium. If you use boxes, leave the lid slightly off, or punch a few holes.
  4. Silica gel sachets. The ones that come in packaging. Two per box, replaced every few months, do a genuine amount of work for free.
  5. Stuff them. Paper or shoe trees hold the shape and keep the toe box from collapsing over months of not being worn — see how to stop sneakers creasing.

What not to bother with

Vacuum bags crush the shape. Newspaper directly against a white upper can transfer ink in humidity — use plain paper. And there is no need to keep the original box; a box helps with stacking and nothing else. What matters is dry, cool and ventilated.

If mould appears

Take the pair outside, brush the spots off dry, then wipe with a cloth barely damp with a 1:1 white vinegar and water mix. Dry fully in shade. Do not soak it and do not use bleach — how to clean white sneakers covers the wider method.

Every pair that reaches us is cleaned, inspected and dried properly before it is listed. See what is in stock.
